Global Industry Joint Development Forum (2025) Successfully Held at the United Nations

On April 22, 2025, the "Global Industry Joint Development Forum (2025)" was successfully held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The event was co-hosted by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research – New York Office (UNITAR-NYO) and the Global Institute for Arts and Cultural Development, with academic support from the Global Industry Research Institute of Tsinghua University and organized by ZhiYi Industrial Research Institute.

 

At present, economic globalization and integration are facing numerous challenges.How to properly address the global industrial landscape and, on the basis of a comprehensive analysis of industrial and corporate strengths across countries, promote international industrial exchange and cooperation, jointly explore new paths for industrial development, and drive sustainable growth of the global economy is a shared concern among all nations.

 

Ambassador Marco Suazo, Head of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research New York Office (UNITAR-NYO) and Director of the Global Institute for Arts and Cultural Development; Mr. Liu Liqun, Counselor of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations; and Mr. Zeng Jinsong, Secretary-General of the Global Industry Research Institute of Tsinghua University, attended the forum and delivered speeches. Representatives from various Permanent Missions to the United Nations and guests from all sectors of society also participated in the event.

Professor He Zhiyi, Chief Expert of the Institute for Global Industry, Tsinghua University, presented the “GLOBAL INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE 2025 INSIGHTS FROM LISTED COMPANIES' DATA,” which is based on data from 48,618 listed companies worldwide. The report provides a systematic analysis of the global industry landscape, determining the national Industry Power Index using core indicators such as market capitalization, revenue, and profit. It assesses the industrial capabilities of different countries by examining the national attributes of companies across various sectors. The study also revises the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS), providing a detailed analysis and evaluation of the national industrial power and corporate capabilities within 163 sub-industries, with a focus on the industrial advantages and leading enterprises in major economies such as the United States, China, Japan, and Europe. The study also explores the distribution of technology-based industries, manufacturing industries, producer and comsumer services industres across different countries.

Three researchers from Professor He Zhiyi's research team—Dr. Chen Li, founder of Hua Medicine; Dr. Zhang Zhanwu, Vice President of the China Association For Labour Studies; and Wu Xi, editor-in-chief of Zhi Yi Thinking—each delivered thematic presentations on topics including "Opportunities and Challenges in the Global Pharmaceutical Industry," "An Explanation of the Revisions in GICS Industry Classification," and "Global Industrial Concentration and Industrial Structure."

 

delivered keynote presentations on a range of research topics, including the opportunities and challenges in the global pharmaceutical industry, the revision of the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS), and studies on global industrial concentration and industrial structure.

Four distinguished scholars—2006 Nobel Laureate in Economics and Columbia University Professor Edmund S. Phelps; German scholar and management thinker Hermann Simon; David Sprott, Dean of the Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University; and renowned Costa Rican expert Amaj Rahimi Midani—delivered keynote speeches on topics including the analysis and lessons of economic recessions, the role of mid-sized market leaders, the global influence of Drucker's management philosophy, and innovation and dissemination for sustainable development.

Amid the current international landscape, participating representatives shared a common aspiration to further develop a global industrial development framework that fosters continuous upgrading, complementary strengths, and coordinated growth among nations. As an academic research institution, the Global Industry Research Institute of Tsinghua University actively responds to and participates in China’s proposed Global Development Initiative (GDI). The institute is committed to strengthening collaboration with international organizations, research institutions, think tanks, and leading industrial enterprises worldwide, contributing to the creation of a more rational, robust, and inclusive global industrial ecosystem.
